Centers/Labs/Facilities
Texas Center for Applied Technology: The
Texas Center for Applied Technology (TCAT) pursues enterprising
research projects that fulfill client needs while inserting new
technologies into society that promote economic growth and an
improved quality of life. TCAT has the ability to cross
interdisciplinary academic boundaries and couple research strengths
with experiences and successes of private industry, military, and
other governmental agencies. TCAT services include developing
commercial products, building prototypes, and conducting real-time,
real-scenario performance testing.
Energy Systems Laboratory: ESL has helped
the wind energy industry by measuring wind energy velocity and
direction for several years. It has also modeled wind generation
output from wind farms in Texas, correlating kW output with wind
speed and calculated emissions reduction from wind generation in
Texas. ESL is a division of the Texas Engineering Experiment
Station and a member of The Texas A&M University System. The
ESL is affiliated with the Energy Systems Group in the Department
of Mechanical Engineering (five faculty), as well as three faculty
from the Department of Architecture and the Department of
Construction Science in the College of Architecture, and has been
in existence for several decades. The ESL's director is Dr. David
E. Claridge, professor of Mechanical Engineering. The lab currently
employs approximately 120 staff members, including mechanical
engineers, computer science graduates, lab technicians, support
staff, and graduate and undergraduate students.
Riverside Energy Efficiency Laboratory
(REEL): The Riverside Energy Efficiency Laboratory
(REEL) was established in 1939 as a test and research facility for
the heating, ventilation and air condition industry. For more than
50 years, this independent, certified laboratory at the Texas
A&M University Riverside Campus has served air conditioning and
ventilation manufacturers globally. The laboratory is the official
testing laboratory for the Home Ventilating Institute. REEL is also
an ISO 17025 (Laboratory Quality) certified laboratory. Its
well-earned reputation - for tests conducted to industry standards,
for equipment traceable to the National Institute of Standards and
Technology and for quick response to clients' customized needs --
has made the laboratory a preferred research facility among
industry leaders. REEL continues to expand its capabilities and
offers a variety of research and testing facilities.
